ABOUT FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS

Fitz and the Tantrums are an indie-pop and neo-soul band that was formed in Los Angeles, California in 2008, founded by lead vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick. The band also consists of Noelle Scaggs (co-lead vocals and percussion), James King (saxophone, flute, keyboard, percussion, and guitar), Joseph Karnes (bass guitar), Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards), and John Wicks (drums and percussion).

CAREER

2008-2010: Early history

In 2008, Michael Fitzpatrick purchased an old Conn electronic organ and that same night was inspired to write the song "Breakin' the Chains of Love". He realized that he was on to something and phoned his college friend, saxophonist James King, who recommended singer Noelle Scaggs and drummer John Wicks. Wicks then recommended bassist Joseph Karnes (who would join the band after their original bassist Ethan Phillips left) and keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna. When the group came together for rehearsal, they instantly clicked and gelled as a band. One week after their first rehearsal in December 2008, the band performed their first show at Hotel Café in Hollywood. This was followed in the new year by shows at clubs in Los Angeles, including the Viper Room and Spaceland.

The band’s debut EP,  Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1, during the first half of 2009 at Fitzpatrick's home in Los Angeles and was released that August through Canyon Productions. That September, they opened for  Hepcat and Flogging Molly. They also ended up opening for Maroon 5 that November after Adam Levine’s tattooist played him their music and the tour’s original support act K’naan canceled at short notice.

2010-2012: Pickin’ Up the Pieces

March 2010 saw Fitz and the Tantrums performing at SXSW festival. In April, they opened for The Specials and later that month announced that they had signed to Dangerbird Records. Pickin’ Up the Pieces, the band’s debut album, was released on August 24, 2010, charting atop the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart. That October, the group performed on Darryl Hall’s popular web series Live From Darryl’s House.

Television appearances on  Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno followed in early 2011. That summer, they toured both nationally and internationally with April Smith and the Great Picture Show. More touring and television appearances continued throughout 2012.

2013-2014: More Than Just a Dream

Fitz and the Tantrums’ second EP, More Than Just a Dream, was released on May 7, 2013 by Elektra Records. The album’s lead single "Out of My League", reached number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, as did their follow-up, "The Walker". That October, the band returned to play Austin City Limits Music Festival.

2016-present: Fitz and the Tantrums, All the Feels, and "Sway"

"HandClap", the lead single from the band’s self-titled album, was released in March 2016. The album itself followed on June 10, 2016 and not long after, the group embarked on the Get Right Back Summer Tour to promote the record. The album reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 and hit the top 10 of both the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts. In the summer of 2017, the band supported OneRepublic on the 2017 Honda Civic Tour.

"123456," the band’s first single in two years, was released on March 20, 2019 as the lead single from their fourth studio album. It was followed by "Don't Ever Let Em" in April, "I Need Help!" in May, and the album’s title track, "All the Feels," in June. The album itself was released on September 20, 2019.

On June 10, 2022, the band released the single "Sway" through Elektra Records.
